Bury Care Academy Takes Careers Roadshow to Local Secondary Schools

    Published 23rd January

    Building Tomorrow's Care Workforce Today

Over the past fortnight, Bury Care Academy has been on the road, connecting with hundreds of young people across two local secondary schools to showcase the rewarding career opportunities available in the care sector.

Our team attended careers events at Parrenthorn High School in Whitefield and Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom, bringing our message directly to students at a crucial stage in their educational journey. These events represent an important part of our ongoing commitment to building a sustainable, skilled care workforce for the future by engaging with young people early and opening their eyes to pathways they might never have considered.

Parrenthorn High School: Aspire Careers Fair

Last Thursday, our Recruitment Partner Laura Ross and Workforce Development Officer Megan Ashbrook attended the Year 9 and 10 Aspire Careers Fair at Parrenthorn High School in Whitefield. With students at this pivotal age beginning to make important decisions about their GCSE options and thinking ahead to their futures, it was the perfect opportunity to introduce them to the diverse range of roles within the care sector.

Laura and Megan spoke with students about the various career pathways available, from entry-level care assistant roles through to management positions, nursing, and specialist care roles. They highlighted the skills students would develop, the progression opportunities, and most importantly, the meaningful impact they could make supporting people in their own community.

Woodhey High School: Whole School Careers Event

This Thursday, the roadshow continued as Megan returned alongside our Administrator Tiffany Garbutt for a careers event at Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom. This event reached an even broader audience, with students from Years 7 through to 11 having the opportunity to learn about careers in care.

The team shared what a career in care really looks like in 2026, addressing common misconceptions and showcasing the genuine career prospects available. From the different roles and responsibilities to the training and qualifications on offer, students gained insight into a sector that offers fulfillment, job security, and the chance to make a real difference every single day.

    Why Does School Engagement Matter?

Introducing young people to the care sector at this stage in their education is vital for several reasons. Many students simply don't know that care is a viable and rewarding career path, or they may have outdated perceptions about what working in care involves. By getting into schools and having these conversations early, we can:

    • Challenge stereotypes and showcase the modern, professional care sector
      • Demonstrate the variety of roles available, from hands-on care to administration, training, and leadership
        • Highlight progression routes and the investment in training and development
          • Show young people that care careers offer stability, purpose, and genuine community impact
            • Build awareness of local employment opportunities right on their doorstep

For some students, this could be the conversation that shapes their future career. One discussion at a careers fair might be the moment a young person realizes that care work aligns with their values, their strengths, and their ambitions.
