    Published 19th Dec

    What is the LEAD Programme?

As Bury Care Academy's Leadership and Development Programme (LEAD) breaks for the Christmas period, participants have reached a significant milestone, completing three intensive sessions that are already transforming their approach to leadership in the care sector.

The 5-week programme, delivered in partnership with Connected Consultants Ltd at BARDOC LIMITED Moorgate Primary Care Centre, has brought together care sector managers and supervisors for a collaborative learning experience that's proving invaluable for developing practical leadership skills.

What have participants learned so far on the LEAD programme?

The first three sessions have taken participants on a comprehensive journey through the foundational elements of exemplary leadership, based on the respected Kouzes & Posner leadership model.

Session 1: Model the Way established the critical distinction between leadership and management, exploring leadership behaviours and increasing self-awareness through Wilson's Quadrant. Participants examined "what it's like to be on the receiving end of me," encouraging deep reflection on their impact on teams.

Session 2: Inspire a Shared Vision focused on creating and communicating compelling visions that motivate teams and align everyone toward common goals, essential skills for care leaders working in complex, people-focused environments.

Session 3: Challenge the Process equipped participants with tools to innovate, take calculated risks, and continuously improve their services, moving beyond "we've always done it this way" thinking to embrace positive change.

What are participants saying about the programme?

The experiential learning approach is resonating strongly with participants, who appreciate the opportunity to learn alongside peers facing similar leadership challenges.

Zoe Schofield, Team Leader at A Humble Rest Home in Lichfield, is new to leadership after progressing from a senior care assistant role. She shared: "I wanted to get a basic knowledge of leadership, understand it a bit better for myself. The first session was really eye-opening because I got to see different types of leaders and different leadership styles that people use."

Zoe Cracknell reflected on her own self-discovery through the programme: "I discovered I'm a lot more expressive and confident than I thought I was."

James Woodard, Service Manager for The Focus Foundation, a small charity providing community residential care, highlighted one of the common challenges in care leadership: "Sometimes it's hard getting the message across that we value our team. It's about empowering people and making them feel rewarded for the role they're doing."

'Coming together for sessions like this is really important to be able to learn how other people do it as well and how I can incorporate those strategies into what we're trying to achieve.'
    — James Woodard, Service Manager, The Focus Foundation

James emphasized how valuable it is to realize others face similar challenges: "It's not just me that's got struggles and problems we're trying to deal with; seeing how others approach challenges is incredibly helpful."

When does the LEAD programme resume?

Following the Christmas break, participants will return on January 15th, 2025 for Session 4: Enable Others to Act. This crucial session will focus on fostering collaboration, building trust, and empowering team members to take ownership and initiative.

The programme concludes on January 22nd, 2025 with Session 5: Encourage the Heart, which explores how to recognize contributions, celebrate achievements, and create a culture where people feel valued and motivated.

These final two sessions will complete the Kouzes & Posner framework, equipping participants with a comprehensive leadership toolkit they can apply immediately in their care settings.
